Welcome to Neon Trees 2024 Spring Exhibit
A few years ago, artist Shalimar Waffa conceived the idea of combining modern art with bonsai trees, inspired by her husband Brad's newfound fascination with the bonsai art form. Her visit to the Blue Spiral gallery in downtown Asheville, NC in 2023, where bonsai trees were juxtaposed with contemporary artwork, ignited her ambition to curate a spring exhibit in 2024, leading us to the Neon Trees collection. She then met Young Choe through a kusamono workshop and absolutely fell in love with the kusamono art form and also holds Young in high regard both as an individual and an artist. Desiring to incorporate these exquisite accents into each exhibit as a great bonus, she also saw it as an opportunity for the public to not only gain insight into the world of bonsai but also to discover kusamono, a lesser-known art form.
Shalimar has an affinity for the subtle infusion of neon colors, recognizing their ability to add depth to art and evoke an almost ethereal, radioactive glow. The growing trend of neon hues in modern art and interior design across renowned galleries worldwide further validates her appreciation.
While these 10 pieces may exude a minimalist and simplistic appearance, they conceal intricate layers of paint and textures developed and refined over several weeks. Shalimar is thrilled to unveil this collection and share its beauty with you.
